Cavaliers Fencing 2022

Cavaliers Fencing 2022

17 January 2022 Happy New Year everyone! We are starting back from Saturday 29 January 2022. Make sure you register before starting.

First session

Our first session will be on Saturday 29 January, starting at 2pm. The first Bladez session for under-13’s is the Saturday after school starts – 5 February.

Our first beginners’ course of 2022 will start in late February. We will email details including a registration link to everyone on our waiting list as soon as it is available, and will release the registration link to everyone shortly afterwards.

Registrations

Club registration is required for all club fencers (Bladez, Juniors, Seniors) except students in the current Beginners’ course.

1. First, make sure you have affiliated with Fencing WA. This is a requirement for all fencers, of all ages. This fee is a once-off for each year. The 2022 link is https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=45867.

  • Save your FWA receipt number – you’ll need this for club registration.

2. Next, you need to register for our club! As flagged in our last AGM, there are a few changes for registration this year. Register online early to grab the earlybird discount!

  • Registrations and hire fees are upfront (whole year) or semester (six months) only – no single-term options.
  • Cavs club 2022 registration (semester or whole-year) is at  https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=46150.
  • Discounts available:
    • Earlybird – $25 credit will be automatically applied to online RegisterNow registrations made by 15 February
    • Family – use registration type “Create Family” instead of Individual to register two or more members from the same family and receive a $50 discount for members other than the first.
    • KidSport (external to the club) for eligible under-18’s. For more information, see https://kidsport.dlgsc.wa.gov.au. Please register for the club membership normally, and then contact the club to organise refund(s) for KidSport vouchers.
  • Fees below are for the year – halve them for semester fees.
  • Club registration – $400 seniors, $320 juniors (13-21), $300 Bladez (9-13).
    • For 13 year olds, select Bladez to join the 9-13 year old class, or Junior if attending main sessions (Saturdays and/or Wednesdays).
  • Equipment hire fees. Advice is available at the club if you are interested in purchasing your own equipment instead of hiring.
    • Bladez membership and Beginners’ courses include equipment hire, which will be kept at the club for use in sessions.
    • For all other fencers, up to two hire fees are required: Clothing Set and Electric Weapon Set. In each case, the fee is due unless you own all of the required kit.
    • Add one or both fees as required via the “Add to cart” option(s) on the Merchandise page. Click each image for more details.
    • Clothing Set $200. For jacket, plastron, glove, mask, and/or chest protector. Member will be responsible for their allocated items for the hire period, including storage and cleaning.
    • Electric Weapon Set $100. For use of weapon, body/mask wires, and/or lamé. Use “Choose Variant” option to select foil, epee or sabre. A set will be allocated per member, and will be stored at the club.

Equipment

Borrowed equipment will be allocated specifically per-member.  Equipment hire is provided subject to availability and sizes.

Club members will also be able to hire kit short-term (e.g. for competitions) by signing-out items with a committee member. This will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and will not require an extra fee.

AGM Minutes and 2022 Helpers

You can download the Minutes from December’s Annual General Meeting here

We are looking for volunteers to help as Assistant Armourers in 2022. These people will help out with advice on equipment maintenance and repairs. You do not need to be experienced in fencing repairs to help out – we will coach as required! Junior fencers are welcome, as well as senior fencers and parents.
Let us know at ECUcavaliers@gmail.com if you have questions. We look forward to seeing you at sessions in 2022.

Cavaliers – 2021 Fencing Starting

First Fencing Sessions

Wed 10 February* – only if you have your own fencing kit.
Sat 13 February* – Bladez kids’ course starts, plus regular fencing.
Wed 17 Feb, Sat 20 Feb – Back to normal fencing (all being well!).

Note that current COVID-19 rules require a (non-fencing!) mask to be worn at all times by anyone 12 or older in indoor venues, until Sunday 14 February. This includes whilst you are fencing.

You will need 2021 Fencing WA affiliation – available from the FWA site – before you fence (except for Bladez triallers). Record your FWA receipt number to use in your Cavaliers registration, due by the end of February.

The first official Cavaliers fencing session for this year is Saturday 13 February.

  • Bladez (aged 9-13) – 1:30pm start as usual.
    • If your child(ren) are trying Bladez for the first time, please come along at 1:15 so we can set you up.
  • All other fencers – 2pm start.
    • If you are not comfortable with wearing a mask under your fencing mask, you may prefer to wait until 17 or 20 February, assuming no further changes to WA COVID-19 restrictions.

From Saturday 13th February, we will be able to sort out equipment hire for members who have paid hire fees. See the section below for more information.

We will also hold a fencing session this Wednesday 10th February from 6:30-9pm. There will be no kit hire available on this day, so please only come if you have access to your own equipment. It will be like our summer sessions, but without a gold coin donation needed. COVID-19 restrictions will apply.

COVID-19 Rules

Post-lockdown, some restrictions still apply in Perth. Currently, these are due to continue until 14 February – which means they will apply at our first session back.

  • Use the SafeWA app when you arrive at the Mt Lawley ECU gym. This will continue well past 14 February!
  • Everyone aged 12 or above must wear a face mask, both outside and inside the venue.
  • This includes whilst fencing – so, a mask under your fencing mask! Fencing WA have confirmed with DLGSC (WA Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries) that this applies to fencing.

Registration

RegisterNow link is now available for annual or term Cavs membership. Registration of membership is due by the end of February. You will need a FWA receipt number to register. All registration fees include a small fee from RegisterNow.

Held a 2020 Membership?
Many thanks for your support in 2020, especially if you paid for a full-year or term-two membership in 2020! Look out for another email shortly that will provide you with a code to claim your free term’s membership when you register for 2021 membership.

Bladez Trial
If your child(ren) are trying out Bladez for the first time, you do not need to register yet. We will organise a two-week trial on your arrival.

Fencing WA Affiliation
Fencing WA (or equivalent) affiliation is compulsory to be able to fence in WA, including for insurance purposes. You will need your FWA affiliation receipt number to register for Cavs.

An affiliation RegisterNow link, including information about affiliation types and costs, is available from the FWA website. To avoid headaches, we recommend registering for FWA first and saving the receipt number, then logging out of RegisterNow before registering for Cavs.

Kit Hire

We held a Busy Bee at the end of 2020 to check and maintain our club equipment. Many thanks to everyone who helped out!

For those who are hiring equipment from the club (including Bladez kids), we will continue the practice we started in 2020:

  • Once kit hire (or Bladez registration) is purchased from the club, a set of gear will be allocated.
  • This is subject to availability in your size – first come, first served. Of course, if we do not have kit available in your size, we will refund your hire fee.
  • The allocated kit will be labelled and kept in the club cabinets for your use.
  • If we don’t see hear from you for a month, we may re-allocate your kit to someone else!

All the best for a wonderful year of fencing in 2021!

Update on Cavs first Fencing session 2021

COVID WA lockdown update

Monday 1 February 2021 Hello everyone, hope you’re all doing ok, given yesterday’s hard lockdown announcement for Perth, Peel and the Southwest (see WA gov announcements for more info).

I know that we have all been looking forward to returning to fencing – or trying it for the first time! – but the health and wellbeing of our members and the wider community are very important to us, so we need to be flexible. We do not yet know if there will be further lockdown requirements beyond this Friday at 6pm, or what they may be.

Given the short time between the hard lockdown ending and our planned first session on Saturday, we have decided to delay the start of our term until at least the following Saturday 13 Feb: 1:30 (Bladez) or 2:00 (all other fencers).

We will keep you posted as updates arise. In the meantime, stay well, look after each other, and we look forward to seeing you all on the fencing piste soon!
No fencing session on Saturday 6 February

Fencing Starts Again 2021

Welcome to 2021! We hope you had an excellent Christmas and New Years’.

Club sessions will start up again in February, but in the meantime a pre-season summer session has been booked for this Monday (18 Jan) from 6-8pm for interested fencers. Please bring your own equipment and a gold coin donation towards venue hire.

This will be for bouts only, after everyone warms themselves up. You’ll need to follow the ECU Sports Centre’s COVID contact process on arrival.

There isn’t long to wait for Cavs sessions to start up again, so don’t worry if you are not yet ready for a summer session or don’t have any gear. We’ll send out more information soon about 2021 registration and the first club sessions, which will start from 6 February.

More informationLego fencers salute 🥳 Fencing at Cavs is starting again from next week! 🥳
Our normal venue, ECU Sport and Fitness Mt Lawley, is opening for club sessions from Monday 15th June. We will all need to do our part in following COVID-19 Safe rules, both for the safety and wellbeing of our members and the public and to ensure that the venue can remain open for us and others. You can download the club’s COVID Safety Plan here.Arriving and Departing
Doors to the gym will be locked – all entries must be via the lift in the car park. This is because of state laws requiring entrance via a reception area. Maximum of four people at a time in the lift, to maintain social distancing.

The underground car park can be used on weekends and from 4:30pm onwards on weekdays without penalties. Or you can park outside and walk down to the lift via the stairs on the left of the north entrance.

Upon arrival, every attendee must enter their contact details into the session’s register, which will be available in the court. This is a requirement for entry. If you are feeling unwell, are in close contact with a suspected case of COVID-19, or have recently returned from overseas, do not come to a fencing session.

We will be following the AFF/AIS COVID-times mantra of get in – train – get out: for the time being, only fencers and coaches can enter the venue – no spectators, social members or family members*. All fencers must hold FWA state memberships. We have a maximum number of 50 people because the combined indoor courts, including other clubs’ bookings, have a legal limit of 100 persons. The venue will not be allowing any casual entries – only club members for booked sessions and people who have booked gym sessions.

* Note: junior fencers under 16 may have a maximum of one non-fencing guardian attending, subject to number limits.

What to do and expect
Scoring equipment: set-up and take-down of scoring equipment will be done by assigned volunteers, who will clean their hands beforehand and afterwards. All equipment will be sanitised before and after use. Remote controls will not be available.

Distancing and Hygiene: remember to wash your hands well and often and remember no handshakes after bouts. Hand sanitisers will be available at the venue entrances and also at each pair of scoring boxes on the pistes. We expect everyone to use the sanitisers before and after clipping on to scoring equipment. Maintain social distancing (2sqm each – stay 1.5m apart) including when refereeing, between bouts, and during drop-off of fencers.

Personal equipment: You must not share any fencing equipment (weapons, body/mask wires, gloves or other protective clothing). If you hire equipment from the club, we will allocate you a set of gear to use and maintain. You can see more details in newsletter #4, emailed on 3 June.

Venue facilities: the changerooms and water fountains at the venue can be used, but please keep to social distancing guidelines. Water fountains should only be used for refilling bottles – every fencer should bring their own (unshared!) water bottle. Session Times
Some session times will change, as the venue can only open whilst staffed. Also, due to the requirement for sanitising equipment after use, all bouts must finish half an hour before the end of a session.Monday evenings (State Foil Training) – 6-8pm. Fencing bouts end by 7:30pm.Wednesday evenings: 6:30-9pm. Fencing bouts end by 8:30pm.Saturday afternoons*: 2-4:30pm. Fencing bouts end by 4pm* Bladez sessions will start at 1pm from July – see the Bladez & Beginners section below.Beginners & Bladez
Beginners & Bladez sessions will be starting around school term three, which will let us refine our new ways of working beforehand. We will be emailing details to these groups within the next month. The unconfirmed start dates are 18 July for Beginners and 25 July for Bladez.

More Information
ECU Sports & Fitness and Cavalier School of Fencing recommend that the COVIDSafe App be downloaded and used, although this will not be enforced.

Temporary Closedown of Fencing Sessions

At Cavs, the health and well-being of our members, their families, and the wider community is of the highest importance to us. Given the rapidly changing, world-wide COVID-19 situation, the committee has come to the conclusion that club sessions should be temporarily closed. This is to reinforce community social distancing and other measures recommended by health authorities.

As a result of this decision, there will be no fencing session this Saturday 21 March. The current plan is to return around the first week of the second WA school term, at the end of April/start of May. Please keep an eye out for updates through this email channel and Facebook about our next session dates. You can also find information from the wider fencing community at theFencing WA and Fencing Australia websites.

Summary:Fencing sessions at ECU Cavalier School of Fencing will be suspended temporarily to help reduce the impact of the COVID-19 virus. There will be no session on Saturday 21 March.Return dates planned for end April/start May.This decision was not taken lightly, and takes into account the emerging situation in Australia and overseas, including temporary closures and postponements affecting fencing clubs and events around the world. It is our belief that early measures will help reduce and shorten long-term impacts of the pandemic in our community. Just like you, we hate to miss out on fencing time – but we hope that doing our bit now will help everyone get back to normal that much quicker.
I would like to thank you all for your patience whilst the committee has been resolving the best course of action to deal with the constantly evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Temporarily closing club sessions is not a decision we take lightly but one we found necessary. Above all else, we value the health and safety of all club members and their families, and we want to make sure we’ve done all we can to help protect you and the wider community from possible infection.

We will continue to monitor the situation and I look forward to seeing you all when club sessions resume.

Llewelyn Foley
President, ECU Cavalier School of Fencing
Our fencing coaches will be collating fencing resources to send out to you, so you can keep your hand in between now and the next session. We’d love to hear from you all as well! Please keep in contact and keep our community going online, for example via our Facebook page

All the best from the ECU Cavalier School of Fencing Committee.
